Nafasi on Centre

Black art in the Heart of Pittsburgh’s historic Hill District.

Celebrating the legacy of Black creativity in the heart of Pittsburgh’s historic Hill District.

Welcome to Nafasi on Centre, a cultural space in Pittsburgh’s Hill District established in 2020 by the Hill Community Development Corporation.Nafasi on Centre is a project of the Hill Community Development Corporation (Hill CDC), created in collaboration with Hill District Artists focused on the Hill District Arts Plan. This effort grew out of the Greater Hill District Master Plan’s goal to "Build Upon the African American Cultural Legacy" in the community's redevelopment efforts. Through ongoing partnerships and community leadership, the Hill CDC stewards Nafasi as a space that honors the Hill District Diaspora which spans through Pittsburgh, the state, country and world.

Nafasi, meaning “space” and “opportunity” in Swahili, supports Black creativity and community connection and is located in a restored historic building at 2145 Centre Avenue. Through art, performances, and community programs, Nafasi on Centre has contributed to cultural preservation, economic opportunity, and neighborhood life in the Hill District.
